The Burden is Not the Same

One child is born into belonging. One child must prove it again.

About this anthem

The Burden Is Not the Same begins in a place where equality should be unquestionable: a hospital room, a first cry, a mother’s hand. Two children enter beneath the same light. One is handed belonging. The other is handed a lifetime of proving they deserve it.

That is where the anthem locates democracy’s deepest failure. Inequality does not always arrive with a declaration. It enters through a form, a boundary line, a closed polling place, a rule applied differently depending on who is standing before it. Rights are “carved in stone” for some and “made to bend” for others.

This makes the anthem essential to The Democracy Block, Barking Justice Radio’s morning warning system for threats to self-government. The program tracks captured institutions, manipulated elections, concentrated power, and the weakening of equal citizenship. The Burden Is Not the Same translates those structural dangers into human consequence.

Its central insight is precise: power rarely announces that it is taking a right away. It narrows access, raises the cost, moves the line, adds another requirement, or turns belonging into a question that only certain people must answer. The theft becomes easier to defend because it arrives disguised as procedure.

The anthem’s closing argument leaves no room for that disguise: if freedom bends for the powerful, it is not freedom at all.

The Burden Is Not the Same belongs on The Democracy Block because it refuses to measure equality by what the law promises. It measures equality by who must struggle to receive what others are simply given.

Lyrics

Verse 1

Same room.
Same light.
Same first cry in the morning.
Same mother saying,
“You are mine,”
before the world starts warning.
One child is wrapped in belonging.
One child is handed a line.
One child is born into country.
One child must answer for bloodline.
Same breath.
Same name.
Same small hand reaching.
But power bends over the cradle
and turns birth into pleading.

Pre-Chorus

They do not steal the whole thing first. They shave it thin by hand. A rule. A form. A quiet threat. A right rewritten in sand.

Chorus

Rights for some are carved in stone.
Rights for some are made to bend.
One child is born into belonging.
One child must prove it again.

A vote can still be counted
and still be made too small.
If freedom bends for the powerful,
it is not freedom at all.

Verse 2

They draw the map through the neighborhood, cut the church from the school. Then tell the people who got divided that color was not the rule.

But Grandma knows where the line was moved. The bus stop knows who disappeared. The polling place can still be open while the people are not heard.

Pre-Chorus

They do not say you have no voice. They make your voice run thin. They do not lock the front door shut. They move the door again.

Chorus

Rights for some are carved in stone. Rights for some are made to bend. One child is born into belonging. One child must prove it again.

A vote can still be counted and still be made too small. If freedom bends for the powerful, it is not freedom at all.

Bridge

This was written after fire. This was written after chains. No bloodline over birthright. No caste with cleaner names.

No map that steals the people. No law that hides the blade. No judge should call it neutral when the burden is handmade.

Breakdown

A certificate. A district line. A mother’s name. A borrowed time.

A child who belongs. A vote that should count. A country still asking who it can live without.

Final Chorus

Rights for some are carved in stone. Rights for some are made to bend. One child is born into belonging. One child must prove it again.

A vote can still be counted and still be made too small. If freedom bends for the powerful, it is not freedom at all.

Outro

Barking Justice Music… Do not call it equal when the burden is not the same. Do not call it justice when only some inherit the name.
