Forgotten Fields: The War That Followed Us Home
We carry more than medals. We march, and always will.
About this anthem
Forgotten Fields names the war that doesn’t end at the tarmac. It follows a veteran home, into the kitchen at two in the morning, into a job interview where no one shakes the hand that shook in no man’s land.
This anthem refuses the country’s shorthand for what service costs. “You made it home, now build yourself a life” is not an answer to sleepless nights, to brothers lost to something other than gunfire, to wounds nobody can see on an intake form. It insists that carrying duty doesn’t end at discharge, and that being unseen is its own kind of harm.
It is featured on Marching Still, Barking Justice Radio’s tribute to veterans and the disabled American veteran community, confronting what happens after the uniform comes off: denied benefits, unmet promises, and a country that thanks its veterans in speeches while shortchanging them in policy. This song makes that gap personal. It is the quiet field behind the parade the block refuses to let America forget.

Lyrics
Verse 1
They flew us back in silence, no bands, no lighted halls, just boots against the tarmac and memory’s heavy calls. The war was done, they told us, but no one said the cost, of peace that leaves you hollow, of battles never lost.
verse 2
The nights don’t end so easy when sleep becomes a fight, when shadows crawl like whispers just outside the edge of light. I sit there in the kitchen, the news flickers cold and thin, same headlines, different faces, but the war’s still tucked within.
Chorus
We walk in forgotten fields, where no one sees the pain, where silence is the battle cry, and hope comes like the rain. We carry more than medals, regret and ghosts and pride, marching still, though time moved on, with no place left to hide.
Verse 3
I tried to find a rhythm, a job, a place to stand, but no one shakes the hand that shook in no man’s land. They say, “You made it home, now build yourself a life,” but they don’t see the shattered glass I sweep each lonely night.
Verse 4
Some brothers lost to gunfire, some to pills and quiet rooms, some fade into the bottle, some wait for something soon. I carry them in silence, each name a thread of skin, they never left the battlefield, we just brought them in.
Chorus
We walk in forgotten fields, where no one sees the pain, where silence is the battle cry, and hope comes like the rain. We carry more than medals, regret and ghosts and pride, marching still, though time moved on, with no place left to hide.
Bridge
You train us how to fight. But not how to come home. You honor us with words. But we need more than stone.
Final Verse
So when you see us standing, tired eyes behind the smile, know it took a thousand battles just to walk that final mile. And maybe we don’t talk much, but we’re still holding on, to the dream we fought and bled for, even when it feels long gone.
Final Chorus
We walk in forgotten fields, still hoping for the day, when a soldier’s pain is seen and met, not pushed away. We carry more than memories, we carry duty still, so listen close, America: we march, and always will.
